Pella is the tenth replacement window company we've invited into our home for a quote of our window project with 12 windows.

Pella Windows and Doors of Columbus, Ohio

"Pete" of Pella Windows and Doors was into our home yesterday to give us a quote for our 12 windows. Our home was built in 2016. The builder-grade windows are starting to show their age, specifically when we open and close them. About one-half of our windows face the west and let in more heat in the Summer months than we'd like. We also live off a busy road and the noise can be distracting at times.

The Sales person that Pella sent out was a great guy. He was patient with our barking dog and was extremely respectful. He began his presentation by asking us the typical questions.

  1. Why were we thinking of replacing our windows?

  2. How many other companies had been out and who? Was he the last?

  3. Did we have a budget in mind?

  4. Had we hear of Pella and what did we know about them?

As with all the others, we explained that we wanted white, double-hung, double pane vinyl windows. Pella offers full or half screens and we choose the half. My husband feels like the full screen blocks your view of the upper sash.

Pella Replacement Windows are 3 1/4" deep.

Pella Vinyl Windows

Pella offers Wood, Fiberglass and Vinyl Windows. "Pete" also explained that Pella offers Low-E glass in two ways. The traditional way, "Advanced" is two coatings of Low-E on your glass. They also offer what they call "Sun Defense" which gives the homeowner the option to upgrade to three coatings of Low-E glass.

Pella's standard replacement window is their 250 series. They offer this window in double-pane and triple-pane. Their replacement window is approximately 3 1/4" deep. In most cases replacement windows are going to be a bit thicker than builder-grade windows.

Pella 250 Series Price

The quote for our home, a project that includes twelve windows was $ $21,261for double-hung which makes them number seven out of ten companies when it comes to price, specifically. The cost to upgrade to triple-pane was an additional $1900.

"Pete" indicated that it would be about five to eight weeks on delivery of our windows, if we choose them.

Pella Windows - Review of Process and Price

"Pete" shared with my husband and I that his measurements were only "rough" sizes, just enough that he could quote us a price. If and when we chose Pella, they would send out an "Order Verification" person to do the exact measure and confirm our order before it was placed.

We asked if the installers were employees and he said they were as close to employees as they could be, but in reality they are sub-contractors. He explained that all eight central Ohio crews work for Pella solely and don't work or sub-contract for other replacement window companies.

Is Pella 250 Series a Good Window?

After sitting through all ten presentations, I can honestly say there wasn't anything about the Pella window that made it stand out. The one take-away I can say impressed me, was the option to upgrade to three coatings of Low-E on the glass, but when we asked about this option on triple-pane windows, he learned when trying to price our order that this option isn't available on triple-pane windows.

I will say I was impressed by "Pete." He seemed to be genuinely a great person and did a good job of presenting his window. He used the heat lamp, like many of the others to demonstrate how sunlight and heat gets through plain, clear glass. Then he showed us the Advanced Low-E option and then also the Sun defense option. Of course, the Sun defense option allowed the least amount of heat through the window package due to it's three coatings of Low E.

Unlike some of the others who didn't even bother to bring a window demo into our home, he did. He did a very thorough job of explaining how the exterior and interior of the window is manufactured. He encouraged me to lift the window up and down to show how smooth and easy they glide compared to our dirty, nasty ten-year old builder-grade windows.

Pella Window Warranty

Pella's warranty is very similar to some of the others. Specifically for their Vinyl Window, they offer

  1. Lifetime on defects in base product

  2. 20 Years on the Glass

  3. Lifetime on working parts hardware/accessories

  4. 10 Years on Exterior Finishes (paint)

  5. No Warranty on interior paint finishes

  6. Transfer to new homeowner - Replaced with 10 year from original date

Pella Windows, Columbus, Ohio

Pella has a showroom on Gemini Parkway in the Polaris Area of central Ohio. You can visit them with or without an appointment, or of course you can schedule an in-home quote like we did.

Pella, like Renewal by Andersen has a reputation of being a bit on the expensive side and based on the quote they gave my husband and I, we can agree on that fact.

Ultimately we chose Virtual View Windows. They offer an Alside brand window that meets all of the energy ratings we wanted and when we opted to upgrade to triple pane, that meant it also meet the Energy Star 7.0 ratings. They were 1/2 the price of Pella and allowed us to conduct the sales process from Quote to Contract, virtually. It wasn't stressful and we didn't have to invite a total stranger into our home just to get a quote.
